WHEREAS, St. Bernard Academy was founded in 1866 and is a Catholic, independent, co-education elementary school; and

WHEREAS, six Irish Sisters of Mercy came to Nashville just after the Civil War with the desire to establish a school based on the vision of Sisters of Mercy foundress, Mother Catherine McAuley; and

WHEREAS, the school is a leading educational institution that provides an excellent Catholic academic education built upon a foundation of self-discipline, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for social justice in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy; and

WHEREAS, St. Bernard Academy offers a distinctive academic program designed to challenge and empower students to reach their full potential, with special emphasis on basic skills, thinking skills, problem solving, and the effective use of language; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Education named St. Bernard Academy a 2017 Blue Ribbon Exemplary High Performing School; and

WHEREAS, out of 130,000 public and private schools in the country, only 342 schools received the Blue Ribbon Award, and only two schools from Tennessee received this distinction, placing St. Bernard Academy in the top 0.25 percent of schools that were bestowed this award; and

WHEREAS, the term “high performing” indicates that St. Bernard Academy is placed in the top 15 percent in the country in English and Language Arts, and in Mathematics, as measured by a nationally normed test; and

WHEREAS, St. Bernard Academy is recognized for encouraging and challenging all students to develop their full potential through curriculum, leadership, school climate and culture, and initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Ribbon Award is an indication to the community at-large of the academic rigor and success St. Bernard Academy offers its students, and it is a great tribute to the hard working teachers, students, and families of the school community.
