RESOLUTION RS2017-935

A resolution recognizing the month of November, 2017 as "Movember" in Nashville in order to raise public awareness for men’s health issues.

WHEREAS, “Movember” is a men’s health initiative created to raise awareness for men’s health concerns with the goal to “change the face of men’s health”; and

WHEREAS, the average life expectancy of men in the United States is almost five years less than women, furthermore, 12.1% of men 18 years and older are in fair or poor health, and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime; and

WHEREAS, there are about 8,850 new cases of testicular cancer diagnosed each year, and approximately 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer in 2017 in the United States alone; and

WHEREAS, “Movember” started in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, and is observed around the world every November 1st-30th, with campaigns in 21 countries encouraging men to grow mustaches to spark conversations regarding men’s health issues; and

WHEREAS, The Movember Foundation has raised $769 million, helped fund more than 1,200 breakthrough men’s health projects in 21 countries, and in the United States in 2016, more than 84,398 people participated in “Movember” and raised over $17.4 million;

WHEREAS, The Movember Foundation is the only global charity focused solely on men’s health, with the objective of helping men live happier, healthier, longer lives through investments in key areas of men’s well-being; and

WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Council supports the “Movember” movement and strives to break stigmas surrounding men’s physical and mental health issues by increasing public awareness in Nashville during the month of November.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing “Movember” in Nashville for the month of November 2017.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
