RESOLUTION RS2017-932

A resolution honoring 2017-2018 Tennessee Teacher of the Year, Cicely Woodard.

WHEREAS, on September 28, 2017, the Tennessee Department of Education named Cicely Woodard Tennessee Teacher of the Year, and she will now advance to the National Teacher of the Year in 2018; and

WHEREAS, teachers are scored on characteristics of a well-rounded educator, including relationships with students, leadership and overall academic performance of students; and

WHEREAS, the Teacher of the Year program provides recognition to teachers on a district, regional, state, and national level; and

WHEREAS, as Tennessee Teacher of the Year, Ms. Woodard will be an ambassador for teachers in Tennessee, will serve as Tennessee’s representative in the National Teacher of the Year Program, and will also sit on the Teacher Advisory Council during the 2017-2018 school year; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Woodard is currently an eighth grade math teacher at West End Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee, and a 13-year veteran of Metro Nashville Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Education chose Ms. Woodard for her outstanding communication and leadership skills, as well as her expertise in helping students grasp challenging mathematics concepts and developing meaningful classroom assessments; and

WHEREAS, Director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, Dr. Shawn Joseph said “Mrs. Woodard exemplifies what it means to always strive for excellence in the classroom, she exceeds expectations every day and will continue to do so as an ambassador for the state of Tennessee”; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and congratulate Cicely Woodard on being selected the 2017-2018 Tennessee Teacher of the Year.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Cicely Woodard on being awarded Tennessee Teacher of the Year, and for her dedication to Metro Nashville Public Schools and its students.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
