RESOLUTION NO. RS2017-765

A resolution requesting that the Metro Nashville Network, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works, prepare and broadcast public service announcements promoting pedestrian awareness and safety.

WHEREAS, the Metro Nashville Network operates as the Metro Government’s video news and information service; and

WHEREAS, content of the Metro Nashville Network is broadcast on Comcast channel 3 and AT&T U-verse channel 99, and is live-streamed at mnn.nashville.gov; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Nashville Network provides citizens with informative videos, announcements, broadcasts of meetings, and general helpful information; and

WHEREAS, the explosive population growth that Nashville has experienced in recent years has significantly increased the volume of both automobiles on city roadways and pedestrian traffic in crosswalks and intersections; and

WHEREAS, Nashville was recently listed as among the most deadly cities in which to walk, according to Smart Growth America -- a coalition of advocacy organizations working to build better cities and towns; and

WHEREAS, public service announcements promoting pedestrian awareness and safety would help educate the residents of Nashville and Davidson County of their responsibilities and rights as both drivers and pedestrians, in an effort to reduce the number and severity of automobile accidents involving pedestrians.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the members of the Metropolitan Council hereby request that the Metro Nashville Network, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, prepare public service announcements promoting pedestrian awareness and safety.

Section 2. That the public service announcements include information regarding crosswalk signs and markings, compliance with pedestrian laws, and general pedestrian safety.

Section 3. That the Metro Nashville Network broadcast the public service announcements on a regular basis and at regular intervals.

Section 4. That the Metropolitan Clerk be instructed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Directors of Information Technology Services and the Department of Public Works upon its adoption.

Section 5. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
