RESOLUTION NO. RS2017-679

A resolution recognizing National Teachers Day on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, and National Teachers Appreciation Week from Sunday, May 7, 2017 to Saturday, May 13, 2017.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association and the National Education Association have designated May 9th as National Appreciation Teachers Day. The unofficial holiday in Nashville is celebrated on the Tuesday of Teacher Appreciate Week, which is always during the first full week of May; and

WHEREAS, this special week honors teachers of all levels who play a critical role in educating and shaping our children: the future leaders of our country. They are kind, patient, hard-working, dedicated and understanding professionals that mold our children’s lives in a positive direction and we entrust our children with the teachers that affect their lives on a daily basis.

WHEREAS, teachers work to open student’s minds to ideas, knowledge and dreams; and

WHEREAS, teachers keep American democracy alive by laying a firm foundation for good citizenship; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated men and women who have chosen education as a career here in the city of Nashville fill many roles, serving as listeners, role models, motivators, and mentors; and

WHEREAS, teachers spend countless hours outside their classrooms preparing lessons, evaluating progress, counseling and coaching students in after school activities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and observes May 9, 2017, as National Appreciation Teachers Day and May 7th through May 13th 2017, as Teachers Appreciation Week, and urges all citizens to remember our public, private and home-school teachers for their involvement in our future leaders.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. A resolution recognizing National Teachers Day on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, and National Teachers Appreciation Week from Sunday, May 7, 2017 to Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
