RESOLUTION NO. RS2017-589

A resolution requesting that the Metropolitan Council, working in conjunction with the Office of the Mayor, the Director of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and the Metropolitan Board of Education, create a new program for the young people in Nashville and Davidson County to showcase and honor their new initiatives and innovations.

WHEREAS, there are new and very important initiatives being implemented in the City of Nashville for the benefit of the young people of our City, including the Mayor's Opportunity Now Initiative; and

WHEREAS, as a City, we want to continue to find ways to keep encouraging such efforts and to always be looking for additional new ways to recognize and provide opportunities for the young people of our City; and

WHEREAS, our sister city in Belfast, Northern Ireland has created a program that is called the "Generation Innovation Night of Ambition" where young people come together and present ideas about how to make a difference in the world around them; and

WHEREAS, such a program encourages involvement, teamwork, and creativity and gives young people engaged in the process a chance to showcase their ideas and initiatives; and

WHEREAS, we can develop a similar program, sharing ideas with our Sister City, and focus the spotlight on the creativity and forward-thinking of the future leaders of our City;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY THAT:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as encouraging the Office of the Mayor along with both the Director of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and the Metropolitan Board of Education, to join with it and other groups and entities to create a city-wide event, modeled after the "Generation Innovation Night of Ambition" from our Sister City Belfast, Northern Ireland, that promotes and encourages and provides opportunities to young people in Nashville to showcase their innovative talents.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
