RESOLUTION NO. RS2016-130

A resolution recognizing Norman Buck Dozier, Jr., for his many years of service to the Metropolitan Government.

WHEREAS, on March 1, 2016, Norman Buck Dozier, Jr., Executive Director of The Fairgrounds Nashville, will retire after serving more than twenty-five years with the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Dozier began his career with the Metropolitan Government in the Mayor’s Office as a Special Assistant of Legislative Affairs, then appointed as Fire Chief of the Nashville Fire Department, and in 2008, became the Executive Director of The Fairgrounds Nashville, a position which he held with distinction until his retirement; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as Fire Chief, the Nashville Fire Department became the first Fire Department in the world to become accredited; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as Executive Director of the The Fairgrounds Nashville, some of his major accomplishments included: financial stabilization of the fairgrounds, operations and expansion of the flea market and an increase in the number of expo center events; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Dozier was elected as a member of the Metropolitan Council as a Councilmember At-Large in 1987 and served until September of 1992, before being appointed Fire Chief; he was elected as Councilmember At-Large from 2003 through 2007 as the No. 1 vote getter, served as President Pro Tem from 2004-2005, as well as served on other council committees; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Dozier has been actively involved with many community and civic organizations, where he is presently working with the Inner-City Ministry Board of Directors, Nashville Fire Buffs Box 55, International Fire Buffs Association, Madison Chamber of Commerce, IAFF, Morning Star Board and has also served in many capacities with other prominent organizations; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Dozier has received a host of well-deserved accolades including the 2006 “The President’s Call to Service Award”, the Nashville Police Department “Citizen Commendation Award”, FBI Letter of Commendation along with several others and played an active role in athletics as a TSSAA All-Star Football and High School Basketball Coach, Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Official, and Junior College Officials Association Commissioner; and

WHEREAS, while his colleagues will deeply miss him, Mr. Dozier will most deservedly spend his retirement with his wife Sandra, son Sean, daughter Shannon, grandchildren and other family members, and partake in the many hobbies and activities he enjoys; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Norman Buck Dozier, Jr., for his work and accomplishments for the benefit of the Nashville area community and wish him all the best.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Norman Buck Dozier, Jr., for his many years of service to the Metropolitan Governement.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Norman Buck Dozier, Jr.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
