RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-68

A resolution recognizing “Human Rights Day” on December 10, 2015 in Metro Nashville.

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of the United Nations approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948, declaring that “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world;” and

WHEREAS, a recommitment by the United States to the principles and ideals of the Universal Declaration is essential for its promise to ensure equality and justice; and

WHEREAS, the basic human rights addressed in the Universal Declaration include economic, social and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights, all considered to be equally important in fostering human dignity and freedom; and

WHEREAS, the Universal Declaration calls for all people and governments to promote and respect recognized rights, while providing standards of achievement for governments throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, each year on December 10th, the international community commemorates this event and recommits itself to the broader achievement of human rights; and

WHEREAS, numerous community, civic, religious and non-profit organizations, including the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, Metro Human Relations Commission, United Nations Association, Amnesty International, YWCA, Faith and Culture Center, Church of Scientology, Tennessee United for Human Rights, and others work to ensure equal rights and protections for all residents; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission share this commitment of civil and human rights for all; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council acknowledges the significance of human rights to the world’s citizens and to encourage residents of Davidson County to join us in celebrating Human Rights Day on December 10, 2015.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record recognizing “Human Rights Day” on December 10, 2015 in Metro Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Metro Human Relations Commission.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
