RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-17
A resolution recognizing World Stroke Day – October 29th 2015.
WHEREAS, each year, more than 6 million lives are lost to stroke worldwide and one in six people will suffer a stroke in their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability and the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 130,000 people nationwide and more than 3,300 Tennesseans each year; and
WHEREAS, between 2012 and 2030 total direct annual stroke-related medical costs are expected to increase from $71.55 billion to $184.13 billion; and overall, total annual costs of stroke are projected to increase to $240.67 billion by 2030, an increase of 129 percent; and
WHEREAS, new and effective treatments have been developed to treat and minimize the severity and damaging effect of strokes, although more research is needed; and
WHEREAS, much can be done to prevent and treat stroke and potentially preventable dementias and rehabilitate those who suffer from those; and
WHEREAS, one in three Americans can’t recall any stroke warning signs or symptoms; and
WHEREAS, more than half (58%) of Americans don’t know if they are at risk for stroke; and
WHEREAS, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke campaign helps people learn how to recognize and respond to stroke warning signs using the acronym F.A.S.T., where F stands for Face Drooping, A stands for Arm Weakness, S stands for Speech Difficulty, and T means Time to call 9-1-1 if any signs are present; and
WHEREAS, on World Stroke Day, October 29th, the American Stroke Association will encourage Americans to learn and share the stroke warning signs by sharing the F.A.S.T. message and joining the World Stroke Day Pledge at StrokeAssociation.org/worldstrokeday; and
WHEREAS, the American Stroke Association, in collaboration with stroke organizations throughout the world, will encourage the public to wear the Stroke Solidarity String, which serves as a universal symbol to unite the world in the fight against stroke; and
WHEREAS, professional and public awareness is the first step to action; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council hereby recognize October 29th, 2015 as World Stroke day in Nashville and urge all citizens of our City to familiarize themselves with the risk factors associated with stroke, recognize the warning signs and symptoms, and on first signs of a stroke dial 9-1-1 immediately so that we might begin to reduce the devastating effects of stroke on our population.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing World Stroke Day – October 29th, 2015.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the American Heart Association.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
