RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-16

A resolution honoring the life of Marshall I. Karr noted Nashville businessman and philanthropist.

WHEREAS, in the course of time almost every community can identify with at least one unique individual that becomes endeared to the people of that community and Marshall I. Karr was that individual; and

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, the passing of Marshall I. Karr brought a great loss to the family and friends of this beloved individual; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Karr started his own company in 1984 and became the managing partner for Karr Commercial, LLC., a multi-faceted commercial and residential real estate firm that is accredited, and that he was able to oversee and assist in the renovation and historic preservation of many of Nashville’s landmarks and residences; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Karr was the managing partner as well of Karr Construction Company which his father founded in 1957. Mr. Karr and his father built many subdivisions in Franklin and Nashville which is a fully licensed construction company; and

WHEREAS, in his capacity as a Real Estate consultant, Mr. Karr was asked by Judge Clement to be the court appointed Trustee for the owner of Tootsie’s Orchard Lounge a Nashville landmark in downtown Nashville and for over 15 years, Mr. Karr has made sure that the interest of the estate has been protected; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Karr remained active in the community – both in real estate and charitable organizations as he was a Commissioner and Chaired The Metropolitan Government Tax Equalization Board, a member of the Mayor’s Task force for the Convention Center Authority and a former officer and Director on the Board of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, a member of the Tennessee Association of Realtors, the Institute of Real Estate Management, and past Chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Karr has also served as a member of the committee for the restoration of the Tennessee State Capital, The Nashville City Center Land Use Sub-Committee, The inaugural class of the Transit Citizen Leadership Academy for bringing high speed rail to Middle Tennessee, a former member of the Metro Historical Commission, and The Board of Directors of the Gordon Jewish Community Center; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Karr was Past President and board member of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society, and his contributions to the city were matched by his devotion to his temple, Ohabai Shalom, were he was a member of the Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, he was deeply devoted to his family as a loving husband to his wife Bambi, as a father to sons Price and Morgan; and

WHEREAS, we wish to remember how Marshall lived, with integrity, humor and grace; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council hereby express and extend our sincere sympathy to Mr. Karr’s family and recognize the lasting legacy of his good work.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the life of Marshall I. Karr noted Nashville businessman and philanthropist.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Marshall Karr.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
