RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-1629

A resolution recognizing Tennessee’s yearlong celebration and 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

WHEREAS, signed into law on July 16, 1990 by President George H. W. Bush, the American Disabilities Act (ADA) represents a milestone in equality. ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in the areas of education, employment, government services, places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and other vital areas of society. It is considered to be the first lawful affirmation for equal treatment of Americans with mental and physical disabilities; and

WHEREAS, in honor of the 25th Anniversary of ADA, each month in 2015 the Department of Justice will spotlight efforts that open gateways to full participation and opportunity for people with disabilities and celebrate the successes and advancements made in the last twenty-five years while highlighting advancements in effective communication for people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions and increasing full participation in community life. However, the full promise of the ADA will only be reached if public entities remain committed in their efforts to fully implement the ADA; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that we remain committed to the ADA’s core goals of equal opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency to insure that all citizens are entitled to the same privileges, pursuits, and civil rights and as we mark the 25th anniversary of this historic legislation; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Americans with Disabilities Act as we celebrate and recognize the progress that has been made by reaffirming the principals of equality and inclusion and recommitting our efforts to reach full ADA compliance and urge all citizens of the City of Nashville, its community leaders, businesses and government officials, to celebrate the contributions that people with disabilities have made and continue to make.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Tennessee’s yearlong celebration and 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
