RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-1600

A resolution recognizing Coach Leon C. Moore.

WHEREAS, Leon Moore is a graduate of Nashville’s Cameron High School having played football, basketball and ran track and is a graduate of Tennessee State University, Physical Education; and

WHEREAS, Leon C. Moore was inducted into the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Sports Hall of Fame on April 14, 2009 at LP Field; and

WHEREAS, he was a four-time football letter winner at TSU (1963-64-65-66) playing defensive end for legends “Big John” Merritt and Joe Gilliam, Sr. and while playing for the Tigers, TSU had a record of 33-6-1, including a perfect 10-0 season in 1966. The Tigers earned two Black College National Championships and played in two Grantland Rice Bowl games (1965 & 1966). He also played baseball at TSU for Coach Ray Whitmon; and

WHEREAS, after TSU, he was drafted into the NFL by the Los Angeles Rams where he played on the taxi squad from 1967 through 1969; and

WHEREAS, from 1971-77, he served as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Fisk University. In 1978, he worked as the defensive coordinator at Central State (OH) and in 1981 assumed a similar position at Texas Southern while serving as the head baseball coach. In 1984, Moore moved to Fayetteville State (NC) as football’s defensive coordinator, assistant women’s basketball coach and head softball coach; and

WHEREAS, he returned to his alma mater, Tennessee State in 1986 as the school’s first softball coach and served as the head equipment manager, where he remained until his retirement in 2007; and

WHEREAS, he is a member of Untouchables Professional organization (men’s), served in the Army and National Guard, a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Head and Assistant Coach for men and women’s Football, Baseball and Softball teams, at Fisk University (Nashville), Tennessee State University, (Nashville), Central State University (Ohio), Texas Southern University (Texas) and Fayetteville State (North Carolina), was the first coach to start women’s softball at Tennessee State University, past Member of TSSAA Umpire Baseball Association, Metro Nashville Public Schools Sports Hall Fame inductee and played Professional Football –as a DB for the Los Angeles Rams 1967-69 and Washington Redskins 1970; and

WHEREAS, he has been a mentor to students that he has served in the community as well as he has helped coach little league football; and

WHEREAS, he is married to the former Cynthia Smith and they have two children; Brittany and Derrick; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Coach Leon Moore and extend our best wishes for success in the future.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Coach Leon C. Moore.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Coach Leon C. Moore.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
