RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-1599

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation to rename Whitsett Park located at 355A Wimpole Drive as “Dudley Jones Park”.

WHEREAS, on July 3, 2015, Dudley “Big Daddy” Jones, the patriarch of the Dairy King restaurant, died at the age of 87; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Jones and his wife purchased the Dairy King building on East Thompson Lane in 1970 and transformed the restaurant into a meat and three, which became famous in part for its chocolate fried pies; and

WHEREAS, over the decades, Dudley Jones and his Dairy King restaurant became fixtures in the community; and

WHEREAS, a veteran of the Korean War, Dudley Jones was an avid fan of Glencliff High School and Lipscomb University athletics, and was often seen in the stands wearing a Korean Veterans baseball hat; and

WHEREAS, based upon Dudley Jones’ decades-long contribution to the South Nashville community and his service to our country, it is fitting and proper that Whitsett Park be renamed in his honor.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation to rename Whitsett Park located at 355A Wimpole Drive as “Dudley Jones Park”.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Parks Director Tommy Lynch and to the members of the Board of Parks and Recreation.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
