RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-1479

A resolution recognizing First Baptist Church Joelton on the occasion of the church’s 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, on August 9, 2015 members of First Baptist Church Joelton will mark their congregation’s 100th anniversary, the church’s long history of area outreach, commitment to bettering their community, and remarkable place of worship is worthy of recognition and praise; and

WHEREAS, the roots of this impressive congregation of believers can be traced back to early August 1915 when, as President Woodrow Wilson contemplated the war between Germany and Russia and while Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford had movies playing in Nashville theaters; 23 people were meeting to organize a Baptist church in Joelton, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, those 23 people fittingly chose the name “Joelton Baptist Church,” originally worshiping in a brush arbor and tobacco barn until their new worship center was completed in 1916; and

WHEREAS, for the first 25 years of its existence, the church was served by men who pastored two small churches at the same time, preaching at each one on alternate Sundays; and

WHEREAS, by the providence of God, Joelton Baptist Church began to grow and many baptisms in Sycamore Creek followed; and

WHEREAS, in 1963 the church membership had grown so much the original building couldn’t contain them, and the building was torn down and services were held in a large tent with saw dust floors while a new sanctuary and full basement for educational space was built; and

WHEREAS, in 1972 the name Joelton Baptist Church was officially changed to First Baptist Church Joelton; and

WHEREAS, many powerful men of God have shepherded this flock over its century of service and today First Baptist Church Joelton stands as a tribute to the dedication, commitment and hard work of its members, past and present, who have devoted their time, energy, and resources to ensure its continued existence as a house of God; and

WHEREAS, blessed with steadfast and faithful leadership, the congregation of First Baptist Church Joelton is currently led by Reverend David Royalty; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the members and clergy of First Baptist Church Joelton on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of their church and extend to them best wishes on their continuing ministry.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing First Baptist Church of Joelton on the occasion of the church’s 100th anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Reverend David Royalty on behalf of the First Baptist Church Joelton.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
