RESOLUTION NO. RS2015-1402

A resolution recognizing Belmont University Bruins men’s basketball head coach Rick Byrd on his 700th career win.

WHEREAS, in his twenty ninth season at Belmont, the men’s basketball program has been shaped by nationally-acclaimed head coach Rick Byrd who continues to lay the groundwork by sharing his knowledge of the game and his passion for the sport; and

WHEREAS, Coach Byrd is a man of true character and commitment, he exemplifies dedication and leadership, is respected for his tireless efforts to excel, and is always guided by solid principles and high standards on and off the court; and

WHEREAS, Coach Byrd conducts basketball camps annually during the summer for Nashville’s youth; and

WHEREAS, Coach Byrd has led Belmont to six NCAA Division I tournaments in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2013, is currently one of five active NCAA coaches to have 500 wins at one school and one of 11 active coaches to have more than 600 career wins; and

WHEREAS, Coach Byrd, with over 600 of his wins with Belmont, is one of only seven active NCAA Division I head coaches with 700 career wins having achieved that on January 17th, 2015, when Belmont defeated Austin Peay 89-83. Coach Byrd ranks first in career victories among active coaches from outside major conferences; and

WHEREAS, Coach Byrd was inducted into the Belmont Hall of Fame in 1996, received OVC Coach of the Year in 2013, inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, and has received many other awards and accolades throughout his tenure; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes head coach Rick Byrd for his contributions to the sport of basketball and wish him continued success in his coaching career.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Belmont University Bruins men’s basketball head coach Rick Byrd on his 700th career win.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to head coach Rick Byrd on his 700th career win.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
