RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1298
A resolution honoring Mr. John Hoomes on his 20th Anniversary as Artistic Director of Nashville Opera.
WHEREAS, Mr. John Hoomes has served with distinction as Artistic Director of Nashville Opera since 1995; and
WHEREAS, under his tenure, Nashville Opera has grown to become Tennesse’s largest professional opera company and among the most successful regional companies in the United States with performances at both the Noah Liff Opera Center and TPAC; and
WHEREAS, since receiving his master’s degree from Indiana University, Mr. Hoomes has worked for many professional opera companies including Ottawa, Teatro Colón, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Columbus in addition to, of course, Nashville; and
WHEREAS, he has directed over 150 productions of opera and musical theater including Nashville productions of Salome, Tosca, The Pearl Fishers, La Bohème, Carmen and Der Rosenkavalier as well as Madame Butterfly for Kentucky Opera; The Marriage of Figaro and Rigoletto with Opera Carolina; and Don Giovanni with Florentine Opera and Opera Cleveland; and
WHEREAS, recently Mr. Hoomes staged the world premiere of Robert Aldridge’s Elmer Gantry, which The New York Times declared “an operatic miracle…in Nashville”; and
WHEREAS, his work has also been critically acclaimed by The Wall Street Journal and Opera News, which wrote in June 2010: “Hoomes has proven himself one of the most interesting stage directors in the regional market today with a seemingly limitless knowledge of repertoire.”; and
WHEREAS, Nashville Opera has proclaimed its 2014-15 season as “Vision 20/20” in honor of John Hoomes 20th Anniversary of leading the company’s artistic endeavors and his establishment of Nashville Opera’s Education and Outreach programs that present children’s opera to over 25,000 area students each year; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulates Mr. John Hoomes on his 20th Anniversary as Artistic Director of Nashville Opera and acknowledge his many accomplishments.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mr. John Hoomes on his 20th Anniversary as Artistic Director of Nashville Opera.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. John Hoomes, Artistic Director of Nashville Opera.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
