A resolution recognizing September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, September marks National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, a time to educate, encourage and support America’s children to develop healthy habits including daily physical activity and healthy eating; and

WHEREAS, during National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, we look to intensify our efforts to combat obesity among America’s youth as obesity is a national epidemic that also undermines our kid’s ability to succeed in the classroom and puts too many of our children at a greater risk for developing serious health issues; and

WHEREAS, Let’s Move! a comprehensive initiative, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity. Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future and giving parents helpful information that support healthy choices; and

WHEREAS, Let’s Move! encourages cities and states to provide healthier foods in our schools, provide extended recess to promote more physical activity which leads to higher academic success and help ensure that every family has access to healthy, affordable food; and

WHEREAS, childhood obesity is one of the country’s most urgent health issues we face in the United States and Tennessee has one of the highest populations of overweight youth in the country; and

WHEREAS, Childhood Obesity Awareness Month serves to create understanding and share knowledge amongst educators, organizations and the general public about the obesity epidemic in our city and Tennessee’s children; and

WHEREAS, in the 2-19 age bracket, there are more than 23 million children and teenagers struggling with obesity in Tennessee and 14.5% of our preschoolers; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the importance of organizations around the state working to eliminate obesity in our children, and encourages families to make healthy nutrition and active living choices in order to reduce childhood obesity in Nashville and the State of Tennessee and the United States.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to The Office of Coordinated School Health Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Metro Public Health Department of Nashville/Davidson County.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
