RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1214

A resolution recognizing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on its 200th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is the national anthem of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the lyrics were written on September 14, 1814 by poet Francis Scott Key as he witnessed the British naval attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Steven Smartt has set a personal goal to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” 100 or more times in 2014, often with the assistance of Mr. Robert Early; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council acknowledges the bicentennial of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, and further recognize Mr. Steven Smartt and Mr. Robert Early for their efforts to promote historical awareness of this anniversary; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes this historical anniversary by having these gentlemen perform The Star-Spangled Banner as part of the opening ceremony of the Metropolitan Council.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on its 200th Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Smartt and Mr. Early.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
