RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1191

A resolution recognizing the Whites Creek Community Club in Northwest Davidson County.

WHEREAS, focused on community service, the Whites Creek Community Club brings neighbors of all ages and backgrounds together in an apolitical and non-denominational environment to share fellowship and a covered dish meal, followed by a business meeting, and concluding with a program discussing a variety of topics relevant to community interests; and

WHEREAS, serving as officers are Charles “Mac” Wilson, President; Bobby Edwards, Vice President; Elizabeth Bogle, Treasurer; Joe West, Co-Treasurer and Richard Anderson, Secretary; and

WHEREAS, upon its inception in 1969, the WCCC met in support of Boy Scout Troop 94 at the Scout House behind the historical Jesse James building in Whites Creek; moved to the Bordeaux Library, then to Alex Green Elementary School for a short period; then in 1971 began to enjoy the current long-term relationship with Denton's Chapel United Methodist Church where meetings have since been held on the fourth Monday of every month; and

WHEREAS, the club's overall slogan is "Total Community Involvement"; and by structuring current efforts around the agricultural and environmental slogan, "Building Community Through Agriculture", the club's roster grew by more than thirty new members in 2013-2014; and

WHEREAS, some of the many community service projects include but are not limited to:

• Annual support of 4-H Send a Kid to Camp, Joelton Youth Baseball League, and Hooked on Fishing
• Annual support of Christmas Food Drive which served over 100 needy people in 2013
• Annual support of and participation in Whites Creek Watershed cleanups, roadside clean-ups and road side beautification projects
• Creation, management and daily maintenance of the Joelton Recycling Center located on the grounds of Joelton Elementary and Joelton Middle School; proceeds shared between the two schools and the Whites Creek Community Club with recycling serving as the club's primary fundraising activity
• Annual participation in the Tennessee State Fair vegetable judging
• Annual volunteering in the Tennessee State Fair Agricultural Building
• Annual participation in Davidson County UT County Extension Agency’s flower and vegetable garden competitions judged by Tennessee Master Gardeners
• In 2014 proposal and creation of new commercial categories for the Davidson County UT County Extension Agency’s flower and vegetable competitions
• In 2013 creation of the Whites Creek Community Garden which is on track in 2014 to donate over 4,000 pounds of fresh produce to needy individuals and families through the Joelton Hope Center Food Bank and directly to needy community members
• In 2013 creation, by a club member, of the Country Crossroads Farmers Market in a Whites Creek area food desert
• In 2013 identification and mapping of 28 North-northwest Davidson County small farm operations producing vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy, honey, flowers, plant dyes and other value-added products
• Creation of a Whites Creek Community Garden Educational Outreach Program to local schools including in-school educational presentations, classroom work and student tours of the garden; participation by local elementary students in a community garden educational video shoot for the Tennessee Farm Bureau
• In 2014 partnership between the Whites Creek Community Garden and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter at Whites Creek High School to allow planting and harvesting of two acres of soybeans for the FFA alternative fuels program
• In 2014 creation of the Whites Creek Historical Society to preserve the rich heritage of the area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Whites Creek Community Club and wish them much continued success in their future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Whites Creek Community Club in Northwest Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Charles “Mac” Wilson on behalf of the Whites Creek Community Club.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
