RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1189

A resolution recognizing the Oglesby Community Club in South Nashville.

WHEREAS, focused on community service the Oglesby Community Club is composed of individuals of all ages and backgrounds who are dedicated to building a better community through fellowship, goodwill and service; and

WHEREAS, serving as officers are Parker Toler, President; Bill Steelman, Vice President; Van Herbert, Treasurer; and Polly Martin, Secretary; and

WHEREAS, the Oglesby Community Club meets the first Thursday of the month to discuss club business and community needs; and

WHEREAS, built as the Mary Lee Academy in the late 19th century, the building was used as a schoolhouse and meeting place for clubs until the school closed in 1931; and

WHEREAS, the “old Oglesby community”, now known as “Nippers Corner” has used the building since 1943 when the property and buildings were conveyed by the Davidson County Board of Education to the Oglesby community for various activities, meetings and events; and

WHEREAS, since its inception in 1943, the Oglesby Community Club members have supported the well-being of their citizens through a wide variety of worthy projects, have worked countless hours to make their community a vibrant and compassionate place that every resident can be proud and through their service have made their community a better place to live and work; and

WHEREAS, over the years club members have made many building renovations including the installation of an HVAC system, rest room facilities and a badly needed handicap ramp; and

WHEREAS, in the past few years the club has won awards for grounds and building care from the UT & TSU Davidson County Agriculture Extension services, and club members have won awards in the Vegetable Garden Judging; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Oglesby Community Club and wish them much continued success in their future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Oglesby Community Club in South Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Parker Toler on behalf of the Oglesby Community Club.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
