RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1155

A resolution recognizing and congratulating the Vanderbilt University Commodores Baseball Team and Coach Tim Corbin on winning the 2014 NCAA Division I National Championship.

WHEREAS, the Vanderbilt Commodores Baseball Team under the leadership of Coach Tim Corbin won the 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) National Division I Championship, the University’s first Men’s National Championship in any sport; and

WHEREAS, the Commodores victory on June 25, 2014 at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska culminated a season of extraordinary accomplishment; and

WHEREAS, the Commodores achieved an overall season record of 51-16; reached the NCAA Tournament for the 7th time; hosted an NCAA Regional at Hawkins Field defeating a field composed of Xavier, Clemson and Oregon, and advanced to host and defeat Stanford in a Super Regional, and advanced to the second College World Series in school history; and

WHEREAS, during their Omaha World Series experience, the team defeated Louisville, California – Irvine, and with late-inning heroics, Texas to advance to the championship series for the first time in Vanderbilt history; and

WHEREAS, in the championship series, the Commodores faced the University of Virginia Cavaliers and captured the Division I National title in dramatic fashion, 3-2, in the third and deciding game; and

WHEREAS, the National Championship is the result of the leadership of Coach Tim Corbin and the groundwork he has laid over his 12 years at Vanderbilt during which he has imparted his knowledge, passion and compassion to his student-athletes and is acknowledged by Collegiate Baseball as the 2014 National Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the able leadership of Head Coach Corbin, the Vanderbilt University Baseball Staff includes Assistant Coaches Travis Jewett and Scott Brown, Volunteer Assistant Coach Drew Hedman, Athletic Trainer Chris Ham, Director of Baseball Operations Drew Fann, Strength Coach David Macias, Administrative Assistant Keri Richardson, Equipment Manager Garrett Walker, Assistant Media Relations Director Kyle Parkinson, inspiring student managers Mike Portu and Josh Ruchotzke; and

WHEREAS, this Championship Commodore team is composed of the following outstanding players and exemplary young men: Tyler Beede, Ben Bowden, Walker Buehler, Tyler Campbell, Ro Coleman, Vince Conde, Will Cooper, Jason Delay, Karl Ellison, Tyler Ferguson, Carson Fulmer, Tyler Green, Chris Harvey, Ryan Johnson, John Kilichowski, Aubrey McCarty, Brian Miller, Jared Miller, Penn Murfee, John Norwood, Drake Parker, T.J. Pecoraro, Adam Ravenelle, Bryan Reynolds, Steven Rice, Nolan Rogers, Jordan Sheffield, Kyle Smith, Luke Stephenson, Hayden Stone, Dansby Swanson, Xavier Turner, Zander Wiel, Rhett Wiseman; and

WHEREAS, the baseball players at Vanderbilt University epitomize all that is good in today’s student-athlete, as they have achieved a premier level of success in competition and academics. Their perseverance, determination, work ethic, and talent have made not only a championship baseball season, but bodes well for their success in the future, and it is indeed appropriate to honor the Vanderbilt University Commodores Baseball Team and coaches at this time; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and applaud the Vanderbilt Baseball Team for their extraordinary achievements both on and off the baseball field while setting an example for the youth of our community.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Vanderbilt University Commodores Baseball Team, staff and Head Coach Tim Corbin for winning the 2014 NCAA Division I National Championship.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Head Coach Tim Corbin on behalf of the Vanderbilt University Commodores Baseball Team and staff.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
