RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1086

A resolution recognizing the 15th Annual Mayor’s Youth Summit.

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Youth Council was founded in 1999 by former Mayor Phil Bredesen and on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Mayor’s Youth Summit thirty youth members will represent the Davidson County area serving under Mayor Karl Dean; and

WHEREAS, The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) is a group of student leaders comprised of high school juniors and seniors from public and private schools all over Nashville. MYC members are representatives of the geographical, racial, and ethnic diversity of Metro Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the goal of the Mayors Youth Council is to recommend and foster initiatives for and by youth, advocate on issues and initiatives that may impact the lives of young people, act as a communication link between the Metropolitan Government and the young people of Nashville, promote and give recognition to the abilities, accomplishments, and contributions of young people in their communities and organize countywide forums to promote and educate the community about issues that concern the youth of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, in 2013-2014 Council completed a 500 participant plus survey about college access and engaged with city leaders from all over the Middle Tennessee Area; and

WHEREAS, the five graduating executive council members are: Nicholas Calvin - East Nashville Magnet, Brittany Paschall - Middle College High School, Corrinne Graham - Hillsboro High School, Joshua McDonald - Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet and Tiannan Zhou - Hume Fogg Academic Magnet and we thank them for their efforts and leadership; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the 15th Annual Mayor’s Youth Summit as a forum for youth to come together, be inspired by successes of other youth, and to offer ideas on improving our city.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council goes on record as recognizing the 15th Annual Mayor’s Youth Summit.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this resolution to be presented to Mr. Brandon Hill, Coordinator of the Mayor’s Youth Council.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
