RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1084

A resolution recognizing the125th anniversary of the opening of The Hermitage as a Presidential Home and the upcoming Bicentennial of Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans.

WHEREAS, The Hermitage, plantation home of Andrew Jackson, the first congressman from Tennessee, Hero of New Orleans, the seventh President of the United States, and the first “people’s president” from west of the Allegheny Mountains as well as the home of his beloved wife Rachel, whose father, John Donelson, was one of the founders of Nashville,

WHEREAS, The Hermitage is the first historic site in Tennessee and one of the first National Historic Landmarks in the nation; and

WHEREAS The Hermitage is the second oldest presidential museum in the United States; and

WHEREAS, over the years, The Hermitage has become one of the most visited presidential sites in the nation and in March 2014 was voted the third most popular presidential site in the country; and

WHEREAS, 2014 marks the 125th year of Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage being open as a tourist destination in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and honors the upcoming Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, acknowledges and commends the excellent work of the Ladies’ Hermitage Association for its 125 years of preserving, managing and promoting this internationally-known tourist destination located here in Nashville, Davidson County.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the125th anniversary of the opening of The Hermitage as a Presidential Home and the upcoming Bicentennial of Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to The Hermitage.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
