RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1013

A resolution supporting the creation of a Presidential Youth Council.

WHEREAS, the Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council was launched in April 2012 to recognize Global and Youth Service Day and the millions of young Americans that serve their communities; and

WHEREAS, the Presidential Youth Council (PYC), composed of Americans ages 16 to 24, would advise the President and Congress on the perspectives of young people, the design and implementation of federal youth policies, and allow young people to provide consensus solutions on the most pressing issues facing our country; and

WHEREAS, the Presidential Youth Council will be comprised of 24 young people appointed by the leadership of both parties and the Corporation for National and Community Service to serve 12-month terms, and will meet at least four times annually; and

WHEREAS, the PYC will be created as an official Federal Advisory Council by either Congress or the President and hosted at the Corporation for National and Community (CNCS). CNCS is set up to support the Youth Council with a bi-partisan Board and the ability to seek, receive, and expend the private funds needed to support the program; and

WHEREAS, all expenses related to the PYC will be covered and each member will receive a stipend provided privately by corporations and foundations; and

WHEREAS, the Youth Council model is working in over 400 cities and towns, including our Metro Nashville Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC); and

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Youth Council has unanimously requested that the Metropolitan Council support the Presidential Youth Council initiative and join them in commending Congressman Jim Cooper for his support of House Joint Resolution 68, and asks President Obama and Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker to join in the creation and implementation of this important initiative.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. At the request of the Mayor’s Youth Council, the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as supporting the creation of a Presidential Youth Council and urges all Federal officials representing Nashville and Davidson County to do the same.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to President Barack Obama, Senator Lamar Alexander, Senator Bob Corker, and to Congressman Jim Cooper.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
