RESOLUTION NO. RS2014-1002

A resolution recognizing the 25th Anniversary of Book’em.

WHEREAS, Book’em, a local children’s literacy nonprofit organization, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2014; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Book’em is to create a more literate Nashville by helping economically disadvantaged children, from birth through high school, discover the joy and value of reading through book ownership and enthusiastic volunteers; and

WHEREAS, Book’em distributes approximately 50,000 books each year to economically disadvantaged children for a total of more than 1 million books given to children since its founding in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Book’em recruits, trains and places 140 reading role model volunteers each year to read in area elementary schools and preschools that serve low- income children and families; and

WHEREAS, Book’em partners with 100+ area nonprofits that serve economically disadvantaged children and their families to get books into the hands of children and teens who have few, if any books of their own; and

WHEREAS, Book’em sponsors an annual Read Me Day Celebration in a Metro Nashville Title I Elementary School to spotlight the joy and benefits of reading, bringing community leaders into the schools to read and inspire the students to love books and reading;

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council expresses appreciation to Book’em for its 25 years of service to the children of Davidson County and joins the organization in celebrating Read Me Day 2014.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 25th Anniversary of Book’em.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Executive Director of Book’em and its Board of Directors.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
