RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-869

A resolution recognizing October 21 through October 25, 2013, as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in the City of Nashville.

WHEREAS, every month of the school year, in darkness and daylight, bitter cold and brutal heat, Tennessee's school bus drivers travel thousands upon thousands of miles on everything from dirt paths to multi-lane highways to deliver our precious school students to their places of learning and then home again; and

WHEREAS, the breadth and scope of that responsibility is great and the hours are difficult; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Public School system owns 652 school buses and operates 589 buses daily encompassing a large geographic area, necessitating extensive use of school buses, which a school district provides either directly or through a contract with a local transportation company; and

WHEREAS, each school day, Metro transports approximately 45,000 public school students, twice a day, and their parents rely on dependable school bus service; and

WHEREAS, school bus drivers deliver their young passengers safely to class and extra-curricular activities in both fair and foul weather from before sunrise until after sunset, making every reasonable effort to maintain their schedules; and

WHEREAS, Nashville's school bus drivers are dedicated to performing their duties in a safe and courteous manner; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes School Bus Driver Appreciation Week and encourage all citizens to recognize their child’s bus driver.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing October 21 through October 25, 2013, as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in the City of Nashville.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
