RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-807

A resolution recognizing the installation of a bench in Riverfront Park in memory of Tara Cole as a reminder of the senseless violent acts against homeless persons in Nashville.

WHEREAS, on August 11, 2006, Tara Denise Cole, a 32-year-old homeless woman suffering from bipolar disorder, was senselessly murdered when two individuals rolled her into the Cumberland River while she was sleeping in Riverfront Park; and

WHEREAS, after pleas from advocates and nightly vigils at Riverfront Park, Tara Cole’s body was found ten days later in the Cumberland River near the place where a barge had been tied up; and

WHEREAS, in honor of Tara Cole, and as a reminder of the senseless violence homeless individuals live with on a daily basis, a memorial bench is being placed in Riverfront Park on August 7, 2013; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of the value of all human life, regardless of individual circumstances, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council commemorate the installation of the Riverfront Park bench in Tara Cole’s honor.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the installation of a bench in Riverfront Park in memory of Tara Cole as a reminder that all human life, regardless of individual circumstances, is of value.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
