RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-806

A resolution recognizing Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church on their 150th anniversary.

WHEREAS, this year 2013, members of Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Brentwood/Nashville will mark the parish’s 150th anniversary and is justly worthy of recognition and praise for the dedication of spirit and faith in God while they enriched lives of their community; and

WHEREAS, Reverend James Green, who serves as pastor, has provided moral and spiritual guidance to the congregation since he took on the responsibility of pastor three years ago and today he continues to guide and develop many programs and opportunities for his congregation to learn the teaching of Christ, to help the church grow in membership and to move the church forward. Some of the accomplishments under his pastorate are, computer upgrades, church van and church bus purchased, new air conditioners, summer enrichment program, vegetable garden, 50 plus choir and angel choir organized, partnership with pencil, urban league, and asset academy program. Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it, except the Lord keep the city, the watch man waketh in vain, Psalm 127:11; and

WHEREAS, Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church is celebrating its 150th anniversary on August 18 with the pastor speaking at the 11:00 hour and the Rev. Howard Owens as our special guest at the 3:00 hour with dinner being served after the 11:00 hour. On Saturday, August 17th a church picnic will be held with people within the church family and throughout the community attending; and

WHEREAS, Mount Lebanon was organized August 1863 under the inspired leadership of Rev. Larry Thompson and a few members filled with the Holy Spirit worshiped in their homes and under a maple tree. Mt. Lebanon is the first Black Missionary Baptist Church in the Brentwood community and many people came from near and far to worship with Mt. Lebanon; and

WHEREAS, after many accomplishments and their desire for a permanent place to worship, the congregation purchased a lot with an old school building from the Williamson County Board of Education for the sum of $150.00 on Frierson Street and the move was made from Hardscuffle Road to the new location of 136 Frierson Street in 1908 with the Rev. C. C. Duncan as pastor; and

WHEREAS, remaining in Brentwood until July 2004, the former edifice sold and the present church building and 8 acre property purchased during the pastorate of Rev. Stanton R. Easley and the congregation moved to their present location 222 Franklin Limestone Road, Nashville Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, outstanding leaders that have pastured Mt. Lebanon include, Rev. Fowler Vinson, Rev. Mark Owen, Rev. Luke Coleman, Rev. Bedford Taylor, Rev. Balsam Manier, Rev. Anthony Phillips, Rev. J. J. Shute, Rev. E. D. Hunt, Rev. C.C. Duncan, Rev. Samuel Wright, Rev. Watson, Rev. Austin Bell, Rev. B. L. Driskell, Rev. James Alexander, Rev. Aaron Jones, Rev. W. M. McCullum, Rev. Baker, Rev. Henry Brown, Rev. C. C. Shoulders, Rev. J. C. Crosby, Rev. Isom Davis, Rev. T.A. Watkins, Rev. Larry Thompson, Rev. Davis, Rev. Shelton, Rev. J. J. Freeman, Rev. Henry Osborne, Rev. C. C. Bass, Rev. Robert E. Hunt Jr. Rev. R. D. Hunt, Rev. S. R. Easley and presently Rev. James Green; and

WHEREAS, since 1863, Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church, stands today as a tribute to the dedication and hard work of its members, past and present, who have devoted their time, energy, and resources to ensure its continued existence as a house of God. The congregations hearts are filled with prayerful thanks to God in remembrance of those who sleep, who paved the way so that they can enjoy a brighter day in worship and give praise, honor, glory and thanksgiving to Jesus Christ; and

WHEREAS , it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulates the members and clergy of Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of their church and offer our sincerest wishes for your continued prosperity in serving the Lord.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church on their 150th anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Reverend James Green on behalf of Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
