RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-763

A resolution recognizing Monroe Harding’s 120th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, from their humble beginnings, Monroe Harding through the generous benevolence of Mrs. Fannie Harding, in memory of her husband, Dr. James Monroe Harding, gifted their home and five acres of land located on 18th Avenue North, was founded as a Presbyterian Orphanage in 1893, and has served over 16,000 of Tennessee’s most vulnerable youth; and

WHEREAS, in the 1930’s needs arose for a new facility thus the location on Glendale Lane where Monroe Harding has provided a home for children who don’t have parents – or whose parents are unable to provide for them; and

WHEREAS, throughout their 120 years, Monroe Harding has provided a continuum of services for children and youth in state’s custody such as Foster Care, group home for juvenile delinquents, and residential, educational and career services for older youth; and

WHEREAS, in celebration of the 120th anniversary Monroe Harding kicked off their celebration at their quinquennial Reunion on June 1st and the festivities will culminate on November 15, 2013 with the 20th annual Laughter For The Children event which is the primary annual fundraising event for Monroe Harding, featuring entertainment, live and silent auctions, and dinner at OZ Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Monroe Harding’s 120th Anniversary as they have helped and continue to help children and youth in Nashville.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Monroe Harding’s 120th Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Cathy Altenbern, Director of Development.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
