RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-691

A resolution recognizing May as Foster Care Month in Nashville in recognition of National Foster Care Month.

WHEREAS, the month of May has been declared National Foster Care Month in honor of the thousands of individuals who seek to assist young children who have been placed under the state’s protective care system; and

WHEREAS, there is need for more persons to avail themselves to the opportunity of making a difference in the lives of children who have experienced traumatic circumstances through no fault of their own and are in need of guidance and nurturing from competent, caring adults; and

WHEREAS, in Davidson County, Tennessee there are approximately 500 children and youth in foster care being provided with a safe, secure and stable home along with the compassion and nurture of a foster family; and

WHEREAS, more than 130 Davidson County, foster families, who open their homes and hearts to children whose families are in crises, play a vital role in helping children and families heal and reconnect, launching children into successful adulthood; and

WHEREAS, the many unsung heroes and she-roes unselfishly provide structure and meaning to the lives of most vulnerable citizens by allowing them to live in their homes, partake of their meals while receiving the warmth of compassion; and

WHEREAS, dedicated foster families frequently adopt foster children, resulting in a greater need for more foster families; and

WHEREAS, we honor the numerous individuals and organizations throughout Nashville who work diligently to serve the needs of children in foster care, as well as the enduring and valuable contribution of foster parents; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes May as National Foster Care Month and encourage the citizens of Nashville show their appreciation to the many foster parents and professionals working in the field of foster care for their contributions, dedication, and love given to foster children.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as designating May as Foster Care Month in Nashville in recognition of National Foster Care Month.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Wendy Lunford on behalf of Youth Villages.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
