RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-686

A resolution recognizing Captain George Russell on the occasion of his retirement.

WHEREAS, Captain George Russell, a graduate of Hume Fogg High School, retired from the Nashville Fire Department after 45 years of exemplary service; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure with the department, he steadily rose through the ranks from a Firefighter to Lieutenant of Safety, served as a Lieutenant in the Chief’s Office of Community Services and Captain of Staff Services; and

WHEREAS, Captain Russell was appointed in 1992 to serve as Loan Executive and Federation Specialist for the Metropolitan Employees Consolidated Charities, and has worked tirelessly through the years to helping others who can’t help themselves; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career he represented the Nashville Fire Department on the first Nashville Night Out Against Crime Committee in 1993, and continues to serve on the committee at his retirement, worked as a Public Fire & Life Safety Educator (Certified by State of TN) NFPA’S “Learn Not to Burn” Instructor, assisted with training at the State and National Fire Academy, was a Journeyman Fire Fighter, Hazardous Materials Technician and also served on the Fire Incident Management-Field Program; and

WHEREAS, Captain Russell worked with the Mayor’s 1st Day event, was instrumental in feeding the Metro Employees who built a Habitat for Humanity home, designed and published two Nashville Fire Department “Year Books”, worked with “Hands On Nashville”, and coordinated events for the Nashville Fire Department, etc.; and

WHEREAS, Captain Russell was no stranger to awards and accolades during his career, by receiving the Nashville’s Council of Community Services “Unsung Hero” award and was the recipient of two Chief’s Awards for overseeing the Commendation Awards and the Fire Department Color/Honor Guards; and

WHEREAS, Captain Russell’s family members also worked in Metro Government as well and cumulatively served 277 years with the city; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Captain George Russell for his strong work ethic and dedicated commitment while serving the City of Nashville.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Captain George Russell on the occasion of his retirement.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Captain George Russell.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
