RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-669

A resolution recognizing “Israel at 65 Day” in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, on May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the modern State of Israel; and

WHEREAS, the United States of America was the first country to recognize Israel as a sovereign and independent nation; and

WHEREAS, as a successfully independent democracy – the only one in the Middle East today – the State of Israel has proven to be a resourceful and courageous nation throughout the decades, seeking to establish as its basic, fundamental principles those same values upon which the United States was founded: freedom, opportunity, and justice; and

WHEREAS, the worldwide community of people who were born in the Israeli homeland, or with ancestral ties to Israel, continually demonstrate the country’s greatness through their noteworthy contributions and achievements that encompass a wide range of endeavors in areas including education, medicine, science, technology, and industry; and

WHEREAS, Jewish Americans have been an integral part of Nashville since its inception, and, in return, the citizenry of the city have long supported the Jewish community of Nashville in their many endeavors and have joined together to celebrate joys and commemorate losses; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council has a longstanding tradition of acknowledging significant milestones and events of historical importance and, therefore, is proud to join with the Jewish people and communities of this State and Nation as they commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the State of Israel.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing April 28, 2013, as “Israel at 65 Day” in Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council encourages Nashville’s citizens to recognize the remarkable achievements of Israel in building a pluralistic, democratic society, and to extend warmest congratulations and best wishes to the Israeli people for a peaceful, prosperous, and successful future.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
