RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-616

A resolution honoring eight Metropolitan Nashville Public School teachers upon earning National Board Certification.

WHEREAS, Tina Atkinson, Leigh Bybee, Jennifer Coats, Lauryn England, Amy Leslie, Lori Lilkins, Lesley Thompson and Starra Withers are Metro Nashville Public Schools teachers who recently earned National Board Certification, who epitomize dedication to students, who reflect the very best of the teaching profession, who are committed to the highest ideals of public service, and who should be recognized for their outstanding achievement; and

WHEREAS, with their certification, Metro Schools now has 65 National Board-Certified Teachers and one-fifth of Tennessee’s newly certified teachers; and

WHEREAS, the National Board for Professional Standards works to advance student learning and achievement by establishing standards and systems for certifying accomplished educators, providing programs and advocating policies that support excellence in teaching and leading, and engaging National Board Certified Teachers and leaders in that process; and

WHEREAS, National Board Certification requires teachers to demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills and practices and findings from Harvard University’s Center for Education Policy Research affirm students taught by National Board-Certified Teachers score better on achievement tests than students whose teachers are not Board-certified; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Tina Atkinson, Leigh Bybee, Jennifer Coats, Lauryn England, Amy Leslie, Lori Lilkins, Lesley Thompson and Starra Withers upon becoming certified and wish them the best in all their endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring eight Metropolitan Nashville Public School teachers upon earning National Board Certification.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Tina Atkinson, Leigh Bybee, Jennifer Coats, Lauryn England, Amy Leslie, Lori Lilkins, Lesley Thompson and Starra Withers and Mr. Stephen C. Henry, President of the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
