RESOLUTION NO. RS2013-614

A resolution recognizing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, upon the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, founded by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University on January 13, 1913, with the express purpose of using their collective strength to make strides in promoting academic excellence, public service, and social activism; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, incorporated in 1930, and continues to be a testament of its founders’ vision through strength, commitment, and dedication to sisterhood, public service, and scholarship; and

WHEREAS, on January 13, 2013, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated observed its 100th Founder’s Day Anniversary in our nation’s capitol; and

WHEREAS, supporting the initiatives of the national body, the Nashville Alumnae Chapter sponsors a Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy in which girls between the ages of 11-14 meet twice monthly and participate in hands-on experiments in chemistry, biology, and physics. They are also involved in activities designed to develop leadership skills, promote science and technology as career options, and provide hope for a promising future. The chapter also incorporates SEE (Science in Everyday Experiences) into the Academy and through our many endeavors, Nashville Alumnae Chapter hopes to help make the community, the nation, and the world, a better place; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter’s contributions to Nashville and its surrounding communities have included seven (7) annual scholarships given to deserving female, high school seniors, support of the Eighteenth Avenue Family Life Center, donations to the United Negro College Fund (to support Fisk University) and the Tennessee State University Foundation (to support scholarships for Tennessee State University students). Additionally, this chapter makes quarterly visits to Bordeaux Hospital, gives donations to the United Way, and has adopted girls incarcerated at the Woodland Hills Juvenile Detention Center, and its many, many social and civic activities; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Alumnae Chapter is one of over 900 chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, representing more than 250,000 predominantly African-American college educated women from the United States and around the world, all celebrating national and local Centennial activities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. upon the occasion of its 100th anniversary and those of the Nashville Alumnae Chapter for their dedication and commitment to educational excellence and public service, and for their historic contribution to their communities and to this nation.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, upon the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Olivia M. Cloud, President of the Nashville Alumnae Chapter on behalf of all its members.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
