RESOLUTION NO. RS2012-408

A resolution recognizing the Oliver Middle School Band program for their accomplishments.

WHEREAS, the art of creating music has long been an important part of humanity, serving as a voice for those traits that make us truly human, preserving our history, and forging bridges between diverse cultures; and

WHEREAS, recognition should be given to this City’s young musicians for their musical skills, talent and their ability to work together as a member of the Oliver Middle School Band program; and

WHEREAS, here at Oliver Middle School the Band program consists of four levels of performing ensembles: Beginning, Intermediate, Symphonic and Wind Ensemble and also offers the student the opportunity to audition for and perform in our Jazz Band; and

WHEREAS, the extraordinary work and dedication of the young women and men who participate in band average 20 performances throughout the school year in both school and community settings raising awareness and support for the program which also has achieved numerous local, regional, state and national awards; and

WHEREAS, the Oliver Middle School Band program, started with seven students, than grow to 95 members less than nine short years ago and has since grown by leaps and bounds under the capable leadership of Director Susan Waters and Assistant Director Katie Harrah, and now boasts a membership of 350 students and is acknowledged as a competitive entity to be reckoned with; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Oliver Middle School band program and recognize these remarkable student-musicians collectively, for their hard work and many accomplishments and offer our wishes for their success in performance in the years to come.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Oliver Middle School Band program for their accomplishments.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Susan Waters, Director and Katie Harrah, Assistant Director of the Oliver Middle School Band Program on behalf of the student-musicians and the school.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
