RESOLUTION NO. RS2012-338

A resolution recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School.

WHEREAS, it is appropriate for the Metropolitan Council to recognize educational institutions that have made significant contributions, through an abiding commitment to excellence, to their respective communities and the City of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School, located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Broadway, is one such noteworthy institution that over the past 100 years has produced outstanding graduates who have excelled in all walks of life, and has remained a pillar of educational excellence since its beginning in 1912; and

WHEREAS, throughout its storied history the school has evolved since becoming the first school in Tennessee to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and

WHEREAS, until 1940, the Hume-Fogg curriculum followed the classic format, which included studies in Latin, English, advanced mathematics and science, before changing in 1953 to focus on technical and vocational subjects; and

WHEREAS, in 1983, Hume-Fogg became the first secondary magnet school to serve Nashville’s academically talented students; and

WHEREAS, there will be several events throughout the year to commemorate Hume-Fogg’s 100th Anniversary, beginning with the Connection Kick Off breakfast and culminating with a Hume-Fogg Gala Celebration in October; and

WHEREAS, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School has had a series of exceptional principals that have led to the school’s success; and

WHEREAS, during Principal Fleming’s tenure, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School has consistently been ranked among the top 100 public high schools in the United States by U.S. News and World Report, with a 2011 ranking of 46th; and

WHEREAS, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School has received several National recognitions that include being one of 300 schools named as a “Blue Ribbon School” for its academic excellence by the United States Department of Education in 2011, as well as receiving a Siemens Foundation Science Award and a National Arts in Education Award; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School’s administration, alumni, faculty, staff, and student body on this historic occasion.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet School.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Dr. Kellie Hargis, Principal of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School on behalf of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
