RESOLUTION NO. RS2012-336

A resolution recognizing Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. will recognize the 50th anniversary of their incorporation on July 17, 2012; and

WHEREAS, the Catholic Church in Tennessee has cared for those in need since its formal establishment in 1837, both through structured initiatives and the individual efforts of its congregants; and

WHEREAS, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Church leaders, including Bishop William L. Adrian, seventh Bishop of Nashville, recognized the need to incorporate the diocese’s social service activities in order to be prepared to respond to anticipated needs resulting from the Cuban revolution, along with other anticipated, but then unknown, causes which might subsequently follow; and

WHEREAS, Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. was incorporated by the State of Tennessee through Secretary of State Joe C. Carr on July 17, 1962 to serve Tennesseans in need and, since that time, has been headquartered in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, although initially chartered to serve the entire state, Catholic Charities of Tennessee, as a result of the establishment of Dioceses in West Tennessee (1971) and East Tennessee (1988), now focuses its attention on Middle Tennessee, performing acts of love, goodwill and kindness for 69,000 people annually in order to advocate and provide services that enhance and enrich the quality of life for people in need, regardless of religious, ethnic, cultural or racial background; and

WHEREAS, Catholic Charities of Tennessee’s mission is to advocate for and provide services which enhance and enrich the quality of life for people in need. It accomplishes this through a wide variety of services including adoptions and parental support, counseling, refugee and immigrant services, senior services, education and job training, basic needs (including feeding, housing and clothing assistance), and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, Catholic Charities of Tennessee provides services through staff and volunteers operating out of six separate Nashville/Davidson County locations; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. on this historic occasion of the 50th anniversary, commend their dedication to providing comfort and assistance to our fellow Tennesseans in their time of need, and wish them all the best in the years to come.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mark Barry, Director of Marketing on behalf of Catholic Charities of Tennessee.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
