RESOLUTION NO. RS2012-232

A resolution recognizing NHL’s Nashville Predators General Manger David Poile.

WHEREAS, the on-ice success of the Predators is the responsibility of David Poile, General Manager, to assemble and lead a team of management, coaches, scouts and administrators who continually identify, draft, develop and motive an exceptional group of experienced and young players; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Poile became the franchise’s first General Manager in 1997 and has been responsible for all facets of the organization’s hockey operations, from coaching and training staffs to minor league operations to drafting and developing players and assembling the team fans see take to the ice every season; and

WHEREAS, under Poile’s direction, the Predators have qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons, won 40 or more games in each of the past seven seasons and recorded 100 or more points in four of the last seven seasons; and

WHEREAS, he earned his 500th win with the Predators on March 30, 2012, when the Predators defeated the Detroit Red Wings; and

WHEREAS, David Poile became the first general manager in NHL history to guide two separate teams to at least 500 wins as he also posted 594 wins with the Washington Capitals from 1982-97; and

WHEREAS, he is also the only general manager in NHL history to record at least 1,000 games with two different teams and earlier this season, he moved into second place on the all-time GM list for games with 2,245; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Poile has been a finalist for the NHL General Manager of the Year in each of the past two seasons and was named the NHL Executive of the Year in 2006-07 by The Sporting News; and

WHEREAS, he was recognized in 2001 with the Lester Patrick Award in recognition of his contributions to hockey in the United States and he served as Associate General Manager for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team that earned a Silver Medal at the Vancouver Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Poile’s contributions to the NHL are also recognized through his participation on the NHL Competition Committee since 2005, a body that is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and recommending rule changes to the game; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes General Manager David Poile of the Nashville Predators organization and wish him continued success.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing NHL’s Nashville Predators General Manger David Poile.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to General Manager David Poile of the Nashville Predators.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
