RESOLUTION NO. RS2012-229

A resolution recognizing and honoring Dr. Deena Sue Fuller of Nashville.

WHEREAS, Dr. Deena Sue Fuller began her tenure of service 40 years ago as professor of Psychology at University of Tennessee, Nashville then at Tennessee State University (TSU); and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fuller has received many awards for her academic prowess and commitment to service including: the 1996 TSU Center of Excellence for Research in Basic Skills Award, the 1999 TSU Faculty Research Award, the 2003 TSU Multicultural Achievement Award, the 2004 HBCU Title III Administrator for Exemplary Service Award, and the 2006 and 2008 TSU All Star Service Award; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, Dr. Deena Sue Fuller founded the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement. Through Dr. Fuller’s efforts, the Center for Service-Learning trained over 200 faculty members in service learning pedagogy and involved over 7,000 students in providing over 70,000 hours of service to the Nashville community; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Deena Sue Fuller has lead the way for the Center for Service Learning to obtain over $6.5 million in external grant funds to engage students in meaningful service learning experiences while improving the Nashville community by supporting after school and mentoring programs, establishing reading clinics and renovating homes and nonprofits; and

WHEREAS, the Center for Service Learning was awarded the 2009 Presidential Distinguished Washington Center Higher Education Civic Engagement Award, and each year since 2009, TSU has been recognized on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service; and in 2010 TSU was designated by the Carnegie Foundation as an Engaged University; and

WHEREAS, In 2007 Dr. Fuller was heavily involved with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), serving as the chairperson of NCATE, on the executive board, the search committee for a new president, and on the standards committee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fuller has been an integral part of developing the Tennessee Campus Compact (TNCC), to which TSU was the first the host institution in 2008. The organization is a coalition of presidents of institutions of higher education who wish to promote service learning, civic engagement, and community service on their campuses. Through academic service-learning campus-community partnerships, the compact strives to increase academic engagement, reduce the achievement gap, and address dropout prevention; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and honors the life of work and service that Dr. Deena Sue Fuller has given to the students of Tennessee State University and to the Nashville community.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring Dr. Deena Sue Fuller of Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Deena Sue Fuller.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
