RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-71

A resolution recognizing November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women across Tennessee and the United States according to the American Cancer Society; and

WHEREAS, former smokers and people who have never smoked comprise the majority of new cases of lung cancer each year; and

WHEREAS, early lung cancer diagnosis and management protocols exist, yet have not been embraced as the standard of care; and

WHEREAS, although some lung cancer is not yet preventable, education on the dangers of smoking, smoking avoidance, second hand smoke and decreased exposure to radon can reduce the incidence of lung cancer especially in children and physical examinations can help detect the cancer at earlier, less dangerous stages; and

WHEREAS, despite lung cancer’s devastating toll, awareness of the disease and its risk and symptoms remain low and the need to increase awareness and to fund cutting-edge lung cancer research is essential to helping patients live longer and better lives; and

WHEREAS, Bill Haslam, Governor of the State of Tennessee, is pleased to support recognize, and proclaim November 2011, as Tennessee Lung Cancer Awareness and encourages all citizens to join him in this worthy observance; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Nashville, and urge all citizens of this great city to do all we can to increase the awareness and learn the risks and symptoms of this horrible disease.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
