RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-70

A resolution recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Public Works Department on receiving the American Public Works Association Public Works (APWA) Project of the Year Award for 2011.

WHEREAS, public works infrastructure, facilities and services are of vital importance to the health, safety and well-being of the people of the City of Nashville and the surrounding areas; and

WHEREAS, during and after the May 1st and May 2nd, 2010 flood the response of the staff and employees of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Works Department played a key role in being organized, efficient, and non-stop in rendering aid to their fellow Nashvillians during this critical time of need; and

WHEREAS, the flood response was a total team effort and the leadership team was Billy Lynch, Director, David Himes, Assistant Director Operations, Veronica Frazier, Director of Beautification, Sharon Wahlstrom, Assistant Director of Finance & Administration, Mark Macy, Chief Engineer, Gwen Hopkins, Public Information Officer, Herbert King, Chief Inspector, Phillip Jones, Assistant Chief Operations, Don Reid, Paving Manager and Chip Knaup, Chief Traffic; and

WHEREAS, on Monday, September 19, 2011 the Project of the Year Award for Disaster or Emergency Construction Repair ($5 million but less than $25 million) was presented to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County Office of the Mayor and Public Works Department for their response to the Historic Flood of May 2010; and

WHEREAS, the Public Works Project of the Year award recognizes the partnership between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County Public Works Department for the substantial contributions they made to the City of Nashville during the Historic Flood of May 2010 and congratulate them on receiving the APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award for 2011.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Public Works Department on receiving the American Public Works Association Public Works (APWA) Project of the Year Award for 2011.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Billy Lynch, Director of Metropolitan Nashville Public Works Department.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
