RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-68

A resolution recognizing Tennessean’s Dwight Lewis on his retirement.

WHEREAS, on September 30, 2011, Dwight Lewis, an icon in newspaper reporting, retired having served with distinction for 40 years with The Tennessean; and

WHEREAS, Dwight Lewis’s noteworthy 40-year career with The Tennessean began as a part-time campus correspondent, covering Fisk University and Tennessee State, he then moved into general assignment reporting, covering state politics and working a stint as the newspaper’s correspondent in Washington DC, he eventually became a columnist in 1993, and from 2008 to the present as the newspaper’s editorial page editor and between his tenure as reporter and columnist, Mr. Lewis worked on The Tennessean’s city desk; and

WHEREAS, his remarkable journey led him to reporting such newsworthy events as the scandal-ridden administration of Governor Ray Blanton and conducting interviews with James Earl Ray, Martin Luther King Jr.’s killer. As an editorialist and columnist he was driven to cover areas of community life focusing on the welfare of young people and how society treats children and teens; and

WHEREAS, no stranger to awards and accolades during his extraordinary career, Dwight Lewis received awards from the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth; the National Conference for Community and Justice; the Greater Nashville Alliance of Black School Educators; and the Oasis Center of Nashville, among others for his work with youth; and

WHEREAS, throughout his estimable career, Dwight Lewis, has demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability, and integrity, winning the unbridled respect and admiration of his colleagues, Tennessee’s newspaper community, and of the citizenry of the City of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dwight Lewis, for the service he has given to the City of Nashville and wish him a happy and gratifying retirement and every continued success in his future endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Tennessean’s Dwight Lewis on his retirement.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Tennessean’s Dwight Lewis.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
