RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-41

A resolution proclaiming October 5th 2011 as Walk to School Day in the City of Nashville.

WHEREAS, on October 5, 2011, Nashvillians will join with participants worldwide for International Walk to School Day as children, parents and community leaders around the City of Nashville come together to walk to school and evaluate walking and bicycling conditions in their communities; and

WHEREAS, Nashville schools are now in session, and the health and safety of our children is of highest concern with more children walking to and from neighborhood schools – many of them during the busiest time of day; and

WHEREAS, the health and safety of our children is of highest concern and hundreds of children could be saved each year if communities take steps to make pedestrian safety a priority; and

WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other health problems among children and being able to walk or bicycle to school offers an opportunity to build activity into daily routine; and

WHEREAS, an important role for parents and caregivers is to teach children about pedestrian safety and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to school each day and the health and environmental risks related to physical inactivity and air pollution; and

WHEREAS, community members and leaders should make a plan to make immediate changes to enable Nashville’s children to safely walk and bicycle in our communities and develop suggestions for improvements that can be done over time; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council proclaims October 5th 2011 as Walk to School Day in Nashville and urge Members of Council to participate in this event and promote the health and safety of children today and every day.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming October 5th 2011 as Walk to School Day in the City of Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Director Dr. Jesse Register and School Board Members and area district schools.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
