RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-39

A resolution proclaiming October 2011 as Cyber Security Awareness Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS citizens of Nashville and Davidson County rely more on the use of the Internet for conducting personal business, entertainment, communication, and education; and

WHEREAS business and government agencies rely on use of the Internet and other information technology resources to provide efficient, comprehensive, and effective service to their customers and constituents; and

WHEREAS as information has been collected, stored, and transmitted by information technology resources more frequently and in more places and methods it is susceptible to breach if not properly handled and protected; and

WHEREAS today’s technological environment is filled with hack attempts, viruses and worms, and malicious attacks designed to get such information without authorization, potentially leading to significant financial and privacy losses; and

WHEREAS the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County has taken many steps to secure its information to include establishment of a formal information security program and an information security awareness training program and has worked and partnered with security professionals and agencies locally and nationally to further information security initiatives; and

WHEREAS information security is ultimately everyone’s responsibility and the best defense against unintended loss of information is strong personal awareness about cyber attacks and methods on how to reduce their effectiveness; and

WHEREAS a central goal of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is to assist in raising such awareness about information security issues and best practices for its employees, citizens and businesses; and

WHEREAS, the Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign (www.stopthinkconnect.org) is a national effort coordinated by a coalition of private companies, nonprofits and government organizations to help all digital citizens stay safer and more secure online; and we urge all citizens to visit this site and make use of the information it offers; and

WHEREAS the Department of Homeland Security, the Multi State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) have designated October 2011 “Cyber Security Month”; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council is in support of promoting cyber security awareness for its people to learn and use effective information security practices in their personal and professional lives, and proclaim October 2011 Cyber Security Awareness Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing proclaiming October 2011 as Cyber Security Awareness Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Keith Durbin.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
