RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-110

A resolution requesting the Tennessee State Board of Education to consider making written feedback a requirement for teacher evaluations.

WHEREAS, the State of Tennessee implemented a new teacher evaluation process for the current school year through which teachers are evaluated on a one to five scale several times a year; and

WHEREAS, this evaluation system has been tied to tenure and retention; and

WHEREAS, there is currently no requirement for written feedback from the principals to the teachers related to the evaluation; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee Commissioner of Education Kevin Huffman informed the Tennessee General Assembly’s Joint Operations Committee on November 16, 2011, that the state was considering making further changes to the teacher evaluation system; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Tennessee State Board of Education require written feedback to be given to teachers describing the details of their evaluation for the purpose of guiding future professional development of the teachers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee State Board of Education to require written feedback to be given to teachers describing the details of their evaluation.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to each member of the Tennessee State Board of Education and to Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
