RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-1813

A resolution recommending implementation of the Metro Tree Advisory Committee’s proposal for managing Nashville’s urban forest.

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee assists in educating the community and agencies of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County regarding the value of trees and the proper techniques for the planting, maintenance and removal of trees.

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee provides invaluable information and public relations services to citizens and groups in Nashville regarding trees, and enables citizens to select and grow healthy and desirable trees by maintaining a recommended and undesirable tree list for public benefit; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee gathers information and publishes reports as needed regarding trees and other natural resources; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee works diligently with departments and agencies of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County, including the Metro Public Works Department, to improve understanding of trees, tree problems, and the inherent value of trees to the public welfare; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee meets and confers regularly with the Metro Urban Forester to further its services and abilities; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee functions through the services and dedication of its committee members, which currently include Carol Ashworth, Chair; Chris Armour, Vice Chair; Alice A. Barge; Richard C. Page; Dwight Beard; Bill Tolbert; Lynda Miller; Dean Glascock; Bruce Webster; Glenn Springer; Heather Langford; Dwight Barnett; Jason Ownbey; David Glasgow; Stephan Kivett, Ex Officio; Randall Lantz, Ex Officio; Rebecca Dohn, Ex Officio; George H. Cate, Jr.; Shawn Bible; as well as past committee members.

WHEREAS, pursuant to its duties and objectives, the Metro Tree Advisory Committee prepared and submitted a proposal entitled “Managing Nashville’s Urban Forest” in June, 2008 which provides a detailed analysis of Nashville’s tree canopy with recommendations for its preservation, growth and enhancement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as acknowledging the benefits that will be conferred upon citizens of Metropolitan Nashville & Davidson County, Tennessee with the implementation of the Metro Tree Advisory Committee’s proposal for managing Nashville’s urban forest.

Section 2. The Metropolitan County Council therefore recommends implementation of the Metro Tree Advisory Committee’s proposal for managing Nashville’s urban forest.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Karl Dean.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
