RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-1730

A resolution recognizing and honoring Mrs. Donna Nicely for her many years of dedicated service to our City and State.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Donna Nicely, director of the Nashville Public Library, will retire November 1, 2011, after 16 years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure at the Public Library, Mrs. Nicely has been a driving force in establishing, shaping and leading Nashville’s public library; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nicely shaped the Nashville Public Library into a truly world-class library while bringing our entire library system into the 21st century; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nicely epitomizes a dedicated individual who is committed to the highest standards of public service by overseeing Nashville’s public library system, which includes the downtown Main Library and 20 branch libraries, the Metro Archives, the Nashville Talking Library and the Library Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; and

WHEREAS included among her accomplishments, Mrs. Nicely brought about the renovation and addition to the Pruitt library, the remodeling of East Thompson Lane and Edgehill libraries, the building of the new Green Hills, Madison, Hermitage, Edmondson Pike, Bordeaux, and Goodlettsville libraries; the building of the new Main Library, Opening of the Civil Rights Room, Opening of the Special Collections Center, Founder of the Bringing Books to Life! program, Founder of the T.O.T.A.L. (Totally Outstanding Teen Advocates for the Library) program, Nashville’s International Puppet Festival 2008 and Nashville’s Downtown Puppet Festival 2011; introduction of digital formats, downloadable audio, video, ebooks and music; remodeling of Teen Center; Job and teaching labs; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nicely, being a conscientious member of her profession, has been involved in many leadership positions in the Nashville community, including the boards of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Downtown Partnership, Country Music Foundation, Nashville’s Agenda Steering Committee, and served on the Urban Libraries Council Executive Board; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nicely has received numerous accolades for her work including winner of the Public Library Association’s 2009 Charlie Robinson Award given to a public library director who has been an innovator, risk taker and change agent in libraries, and is instrumental in the library winning the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the highest honor awarded to American libraries; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulate her on her retirement and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring Mrs. Donna Nicely for her many years of dedicated service to our City and State.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Mrs. Donna Nicely.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
