RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-1624

A resolution recognizing and honoring Ms. Sandra Duncan for her many years of dedicated service to our State and City.

WHEREAS, Sandra Duncan has been an outstanding employee of the Metro Nashville Arts Commission for the last 15 years; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure at the Arts Commission, which includes a stint as Interim Director, Sandra has been a driving force in establishing and leading Nashville’s public art program; and

WHEREAS, her role in the public art program includes leadership in the passage of both State enabling legislation and Metro’s Percent for Art Ordinance in 2000, as well as, the creation of the Ghost Ballet and Citizen public art projects; and

WHEREAS, both projects have received national accolades and helped create a new era of neighborhood public art and a highly popular bike-rack program; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Duncan’s work is nationally recognized through her longtime participation in the national Americans for the Arts and the Public Art Network, including leading the 2002 conference held here in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, prior to joining the Arts Commission, Sandra served as special assistant for community affairs under Mayor Phil Bredesen and as Assistant State Tourism Commissioner for Marketing and Promotion, when she established Tennessee’s first cultural tourism program; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Duncan is also a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Tennessee and an active member of both the Greenways for Nashville Board and Leadership Nashville alumni; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulates her on her retirement and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring Ms. Sandra Duncan for her many years of dedicated service to our State and City.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council also recognizes her for her outstanding contributions to the promotion of the arts throughout our entire community.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Ms. Sandra Duncan.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
