RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-1606

A resolution recognizing the spirit of national NAACP “We Are One” day of action in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, on Monday, April 4th 2011, NAACP units across the country are rallying to commemorate the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and pledge to defend the Civil Rights that are being attacked every day; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated 43 years ago on April 4, 1968, while he was in Memphis fighting for justice for the city’s sanitation workers who were on strike for fair wages and equal treatment; and

WHEREAS, the day before he was killed Dr. King gave his last speech at the Mason Temple Church of God In Christ in Memphis, Tennessee and sounded his urgent call for faith leaders to fight for the rights of workers; and

WHEREAS, a commemorative service was held on Monday, April 4, 2011, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination at the Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize “We Are One” and join them as they fight for equality, economic and social justice, working families, quality education, and voting rights.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the spirit of national NAACP “We Are One” day of action in Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
