RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1463

A resolution honoring local Davidson County small businesses and merchants and proclaiming Saturday, November 27, 2010, as Small Business Saturday.

WHEREAS, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds our community together; and

WHEREAS, according to the United States Small Business Administration, there were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year and small business created 65 percent of net new jobs over the past two decades; and

WHEREAS, it is well known that our local businesses create jobs, boost our local economy, and preserve our neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Nashville small businesses were unusually hard hit by the May 2010 flood; and

WHEREAS, other cities, advocacy groups and public and private organizations across our country have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday; and

WHEREAS, residents or our community, and communities across the country, are being asked to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and honors local Davidson County small businesses and merchants, and further proclaims Saturday, November 27, 2010, as Small Business Saturday.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring local Davidson County small businesses and merchants by proclaiming Saturday, November 27, 2010, as Small Business Saturday. Further, the Metropolitan Council requests all residents of Davidson County to support our local small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
